Not much of a dilemma for me, and not much of a debate either... C'mon, compared to Mother Nature, we're practically angels, with compassion dripping out of our ears 😂 and that's even if we take into account all the pain, suffering, damage and evil we're capable of causing. Funny thing is, this question reminds me of another story. A couple of years ago, I was mentoring a group of students working on a project for a client who wanted to create a platform for organizing humanitarian events, activities and campaigns. The students started researching the topic and trying to understand what kind of people would be interested in using the platform. The common user profile they came up with included people who donated money or volunteered their time to help the elderly and other socially disadvantaged groups. The problem was that I hadn't personally done any of those things. I couldn't really relate to that side of their research, and it made mentoring them properly more difficult. Faking understanding isn't something I like doing, so I had to figure out how to approach the problem differently. While doing my own research, I stumbled upon a story attributed to the anthropologist Margaret Mead. Apparently, a student once asked her what she considered the earliest sign of a civilized society. To the student's surprise, Mead supposedly answered that it was a healed human femur bone. A seriously injured animal in the wild would struggle to survive long enough for a broken bone to heal. A human with a similar injury, however, might survive because someone else helped them, protected them, brought them food or cared for them while they recovered. And that is how human civilization begins.I really liked that story, and I believe there's a lot of truth in it. There's something about us humans, in our DNA or our souls, I don't know, that makes us capable of remarkable things. Something that makes us different, perhaps even special...
